Rima is an icon of the Oosterpoort district. Since the couple Van Os – Richard and Martha – took over the eatery from Martha’s parents in 1977 and turned the then snack bar into an Indonesian takeout center, little has changed. The atmosphere, the seventies interior and almost the entire menu is still identical to the early years. And that is exactly the charm of this wonderful company. The food is still freshly prepared every day in the kitchen at the back of the business, with Mrs. Van Os, now 80, behind the stove. About twenty dishes, all kinds of meat and vegetables according to a Javanese-Sumatran recipe that Martha learned from her mother and grandmother, are displayed in the display cases in the middle of the afternoon. There is a lot of vegetarian choice, such as eggplant in spiced sambal sauce, steamed vegetables with grated coconut and sambal goreng beans and Brussels sprouts. For the carnivores there are classics such as rendang, babi ketjap, sweet chicken, spicy shrimp and of course satay of pork and chicken. Rima is also your place for Indian snacks. Bapaos, lempers, pasties and other small snacks are prepared in the ’toko roti’.
Most (regular) customers – some have been coming here for decades – take the meals and snacks home. But you can also enjoy ‘Indonesian’ on the spot, Rima offers plate service at a small additional cost.
